DCC Water Restrictions (as of 16.15 Tuesday 4th January)
SEE ATTACHED PDF FOR DETAILS OF YOUR AREA
The water supply situation to 12.00am last night was as follows:
Production 541.7Mld Demand – 516.7Mld
This means we gained 25Mld during the day. Storage at Stillorgan is at 603Mld this morning.
For the region (taking all of the reservoirs into account) it would be preferable to have about 1050Mld in storage but that the storage level in the Stillorgan Reservoir is the critical factor.
Below is what the situation was before the bad weather commenced on 22nd November 2010, the current situation (as at 4th January 2011), and what the preferred position would be should we face another extremely cold spell.
Reservoir 22nd Nov 2010 4th Jan 2011 Preferred Position
Stillorgan 702Mld 603Mld 700-750Mld
The experience at the beginning of last year highlighted the need to be able to deal with surges caused by either extremely cold weather or the very quick thaws that can follow. By having over 700Mld in storage at the end of November put us in a much better situation for dealing with the severity of the cold spell before Christmas and the post St Stephen's Day thaw. The thaw cost us an unprecedented 130mld in two days alone. While the restrictions in the past week were severe the number of areas that had no water for over a day was much reduced on the January event. This is why it is so important to build up adequate storage. In effect we need to have an additional 100-150Mld in storage at Stillorgan.
Today is obviously an important day as many businesses are returning to work after the Christmas break. Taken with the decision to reduce the hours of restrictions and to commence staggered cut offs in those areas worst affected, a picture should emerge by Thursday as to how quickly we can get back to a more normal pattern of usage.
Subject to how the situation develops, it is our intention is to be back to pressure reductions only by next Monday 10th January 2011. The base hours for restrictions over the next few days are set out below:
The return to work this morning after the Christmas – New Year holiday period has brought an expected rise in demand. It will be a number of days before the full impact of this rise on drinking water storage levels can be assessed. It is therefore necessary to continue with restrictions for the rest of this week and through the weekend.
Broken mains are being found and fixed and this will help improve the situation. Many of these have been reported by members of the public and we ask that people continue to assist us in this regard(contact details are given below), as well as by reducing their consumption of water in every possible way. Details of the restrictions through to Friday (7th Jan) are set out below.
The restrictions are being reviewed on an ongoing basis and alterations are made where possible so as to minimise the impact on consumers.
Water shuts will be as follows
Tue 4th 7pm(4th) to 7am(5th) (19:00 on the 4th to 07:00 on the 5th )
Wed 5th 7pm(5th) to 7am(6th) (19:00 on the 5th to 07:00 on the 6th )
Thur 6th 7pm(6th) to 7am(7th) (19:00 on the 6th to 07:00 on the 7th )
For further information in relation to the areas and times of disruption please click here
A large number of internal leaks have already been identified on properties empty over the holiday period. All key holders throughout the city should return to their premises, especially schools, as soon as possible to check for leaks on their property.
The Civil Defence are providing invaluable assistance in dealing with nursing homes, hospitals and other vulnerable consumers.
The following locations may experience loss of supply due to localised problems.
Parts of Crumlin
Dublin City Council appeals to the owners/operators of car washes which use mains water to discontinue their use for the duration of the current water supply crisis. Similarly, we ask owners of private cars to refrain from washing them for the moment.
