Desmond Complex Events (Newcastle West)

Our next Fun Day will take place on Wednesday October 19. All the usual activities will take place and we again hope for a large attendance. We would again like to remind people to contact Brendan on (069) 84069 to enable us to have a good approximation on numbers.

The Annual Active Retirement Bowls competition was held in Breaffy's Hotels Castlebar during last week. The event involved competitors from the four corners of the country and was attended by approximately 500 competitors and spectators. The event not only gave people an opportunity to demonstrate their skills but also offered an arena to meet Active members form other clubs and forge new lines of communication to strengthen links within the organisation. The event was very professionally organised and catered for culminating with a Gala Ball on Thursday night. Junior Minister for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring was in attendance and gave an oration on the success of Bowls as a sport and its value as a social tool.

We would also like to remind people about the hospitalities offered by the Desmond Complex. Dinners are available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays of every week which can be enjoyed with music on most days. Groups can also be accommodated but require advance bookings by ringing the office on (069) 62757 during normal working hours.

The Perfect Priest: Criteria and Response
ANYONE dealing with the public will tell you how demanding people can be. Once we thought it manners not to complain about anything; now we are encouraged to complain about everything. We owe it to ourselves (we tell ourselves) and we owe it to others. Indeed we have become so used to complaining that many of us have developed a real talent for it.
Priests find that too. Once we got credit for everything that went right; now we're often blamed for anything that's wrong. And with the way things are, we have become an easy target for anyone looking for someone to give out about. So' if the sermon is long, will he ever stop talking? if the sermon is short: he didn't prepare it, if he raises his voice, he's shouting! if he speaks normally: you can't hear him; if he's away: he's never at home; if he's at home, he never goes anywhere; if he talks finance, he's fond of money; if he doesn't, he's letting the parish run down; if he takes his time, he'd wear you out; if he doesn't, he never listens; if he starts Mass on time, his watch must be fast; if he starts a minute late, he holds everyone up; if he's young, he has no experience if he's old, he ought to retire.
A priest contemplating the complaints of his parish about him, once wrote a 'chain letter' on the subject of a perfect priest! A perfect priest smiles at everyone all the time, he is endlessly patient with children, chats to the teenagers, visits the elderly. He is always on time, never forgets an appointment, never mixes up a Mass intention and preaches for exactly four and a half minutes. He works seven days a week, never takes a holiday, receives a poor salary but is exceptionally generous to the needy. He is 29 years of age but has 45 years of experience. He radiates peace, joy and happiness twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year.
