NEWCASTLE WEST GAA
The County Junior B Football Championship quarter final, Newcastle West v Pallasgreen, was due to be played last night (Tuesday) in Neville Park. Result next week.

UNDER 21 FOOTBALL PREMIER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 4
Newcastle West v St. Patrick's
Not confirmed as we go to press but Friday at 7.30pm at Neville Park are the likely arrangements. Having been beaten once (by Shannon Gaels in Round 2) it's a must win game for us, if we’re to remain in a position to get out of the group of 5 and into the semi final.

UNDER 15 FOOTBALL PREMIER COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP
We’re in a group of three with Fr. Casey's and Mungret. The teams play each other in a Round Robin at Mick Neville Park on Sunday next with the top team advancing to the Final! Andy Brouder, Darragh Quilligan, A.J. O’Connor, Sean Ivess, Shane Stack, regulars with the U16 team that won the Premier County backbone the team with Conor Barry, Darragh McMahon, Sean Murphy, Liam McCartan, Cormac Long, William and Brian Hurley major players also. Overall Monaleen Feile Peil champions 2010 are the team to beat and we’ll have to play exceptionally well to get out of our group.

UNDER 14 HURLING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Newcastle West..........1-4
Na Piarsaigh..............0-11
After the saga on the previous weekend when the game was first cancelled, then back on but with a different venue and finally abandoned at half time due to weather conditions on the orders of referee Denis Richardson, the Final was eventually played last Sunday. This time Feenagh was the venue and weather and pitch conditions were much better as Newcastle West took on all conquering Na Piarsaigh who had won all their previous championship games by between 15 and 50 points.
This Newcastle West team has improved immensely during the season and, despite their great success in football, getting to the All Ireland Feile Final, they have put a lot of time and effort into working on their hurling. The level of performance they achieved last week in Knocklong was the best of any Magpie team for a long time and Na Piarsaigh knew they had a lucky escape when the referee intervened to call off the game at half time.
Last Sunday Newcastle West played very well but did not hit the same heights while Na Piarsaigh were forewarned that they were up against superior opponents than they had played in earlier rounds. This resulted in a very even game with both defences on top and all scores were hard earned. Our forwards got moving well after about 15 minutes and it looked as if we would pull ahead before half time. However, a major turning point in this game arrived just before the break when a fine passing movement set Sean Murphy up for a run at the Na Piarsaigh goal. He got past the full back and sent an unstoppable shot to the net. The cheers of the Newcastle West supporters were cut short as the goal was disallowed and a free out was awarded. The result of this was that we were down by a point at half time.
Na Piarsaigh got a couple of early points in the second half but Newcastle West refused to give in and William Hurley sent a great pass to Brian Hurley who took on the city team's defence before sending a high cross in to Diarmuid Kelly who controlled the ball and coolly smashed it to the net. A couple of disputed frees got Na Piarsaigh back into the lead and their greater size in most positions allowed them to hold out despite the best efforts of the brave Newcastle West boys.
There was disappointment and frustration at the end of this game as the team knew that they had come close to causing one of the biggest upsets in Limerick underage hurling for a long time However, this team has come from playing in Division 2 at Under 13 to contesting the Division 1 Final at Under 14 and, if they continue to work on their skills as well as they have done this year, they will be a major force in premier competitions in the next few years.
Our Under 13 players on the team were outstanding in this Final with Seamus Hurley and Colm Foley not giving an inch in defence and Diarmuid Kelly scoring the only goal of the game. Conor O'Sullivan became the first keeper to keep a clean sheet against Na Piarsaigh all year. Cormac Long was an inspirational captain and along with his fellow county players Liam McCartan, Brian Hurley and William Hurley led their team by example as they have done all year. Darren O’Doherty and Sean Ivess showed that they too should be playing at that level. Shane Lee and Tom D’Arcy played every ball as if their lives depended on it. Sean Murphy and Eoin Sheridan's strength and pace caused panic in the Na Piarsaigh defence whenever they got on the ball and Sean's goal was unforgettable. Gerald Griffin gave every ounce of energy working for his team and the subs used in the Final, Caleb O'Shea, Adam Corbett and Ryan Sheehan, made sure that the effort continued to the final whistle. Adam Harrington and Garvin Crowley did not play on Sunday but were always there when needed and made a big contribution to this team during the season. Jack Fanning continues his recovery while Darragh O'Shea could not play due to illness. Conor Walton missed this game as he was on holiday, but hopefully he will be back for the football.
The attitude, discipline and work ethic of this panel of players is first class and in a couple of weeks they will contest their fourth County Final of 2011 when they bid to retain the County Under 14 Football Championship.
