MINORS BATTLE WELL BUT KILLULTA THE BETTER TEAM
MINOR FOOTBALL CO B CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
NEWCASTLE WEST.........................................................1-8
KILLULTA GAELS..........................................................1-12
Mick Neville Park was the venue on Sunday evening and the floodlit game was refereed by Donal Enright. Conditions were excellent and both teams were well supported.
The teams were level 0-2 each at 10 minutes but Killulta then kicked four excellent points to be 0-6 to 0-2 ahead at 18. 1-1 from Andrew Ruddle (19, 23), 0-1 from Jordan Power (24) and 0-1 from Ryan Clancy (30) while points for the Gaels at 21 and 28 had the teams level at half time 1-5 to 0-8. A well taken point from county minor James Quaid one minute into the second half gave us a short lived lead with untidy defence gifting Killulta a goal at 9. They led for the remainder of the game, their superior pace, marking, skill on the ball, composure enabling them to kick on for a fully deserved win . We had a goal chance eight minutes or so from the end, but didn’t take it and in the final five minutes had a good share of possession, but were not successful via the aerial bombardment route which we adopted. Overall our very young team (only 3 of the starting 15 are overage in 2012, 7 of the 15 who started are U16) did very well; all things considered Killulta fully deserved their win. We congratulate them.
Team: Andy Brouder, A.J. O’Connor, Joey Healy, Jack McCarthy, Sean Darcy, Brian O'Sullivan, Eoin Hurley, Galvin Riedy, Ryan Clancy 0-3, James Quaid 0-1, James O'Sullivan, Andrew Ruddle 1-1, Jordan Power 0-1, Gary Shanahan 0-1, Eoin Normoyle 0-1. Subs: James Corbett, Cian Sheehan, Emmet Kelly, Darragh Quilligan, Martin Madden, Peter Shanahan, Shane Stack.
Well done also to the management team of Seamus O’Connor, manager, and his assistants Brian McGuinness, Darragh Woods and Mike Quilligan who gave it their best shot on the night and throughout the year.
Senior Football, Co. Championship Final
Newcastle West v Monaleen
This game will be played on Sunday October 16th at the Gaelic Grounds. Fellow West Limerick teams Fr. Casey's and St. Kieran's contest the Minor Premier Final. Our last win was in 1992 when we beat Hospital/Herbertstown, while we were successful also in 1987 v Claughaun.
Junior B Hurling
Co. Championship
Quarter Final
Newcastle West v Cappamore
Next Sunday at 12 noon in Milford are the arrangements. With the senior football final a week away plus other clashes, an inability to field a team cannot be ruled out. Don’t travel without checking.
Training this week was on Tuesday.
Junior B Football
Co. Quarter Final
No white smoke v our opponents yet.
U21 Football, Premier Co. Championship Round 1
Newcastle West............1-11
Fr. Casey's.....................2-7
Mountcollins was the venue on Friday night and Shane Hourigan refereed. A good start had us 0-2 ahead at 7 (Thomas Quilligan from frees at 2 and 7, the 2nd a super strike from an acute angle), but pacy and skilful Fr. Casey's recovered quickly and positively to enjoy a purple patch and got 1-3 to move 0-2 to 1-3 ahead. They failed to score again in the half while T. Nix (22) and Jamie Lee (from a free were on target for us to leave us 0-2 behind, 0-4 to 1-3 at half time. Mark O'Sullivan in at midfield was an influential partner to Ian Corbett as we levelled (T. Quilligan 1, Jamie Lee (3), three minutes into the new half. A smashing pass from Ian Corbett set up Ronan Kelleher for a goal at 7, but our lead was short-lived as Fr. Casey's with points at 12, 13 and a goal at 15 left it a two point game 1-6 to 2-5. The final quarter had huge excitement but we had the better of it and outscored the Fealesiders 0-5 (Quix 17, 20, 26), Paul Hannon (19), Gary Shanahan (27) to 0-2 to edge home by the minimum. A good start then with the teams likely to meet again before the competition is completed.
Team: James Stack, Michael O’Leary, Brian O’Doherty, Conor Fanning, Donnacha Woods, Paul Hannon 0-1, Brian O'Sullivan, Ian Corbett, Kieran McMahon, Tim Nix 0-1, Jamie Lee 0-2, Ronan Kelleher 1-0, T. Quilligan 0-6, Tony Quaid, Chris Neville. Subs: Mark O'Sullivan, James Quaid, Gary Shanahan, 0-1, Mark Kelly, Maurice Murphy, James Corbett.
This Friday again under lights at Mountcollins we play Shannon Gaels.
U16 Division 1 Co. Championship Final
Newcastle West v Fr. Casey's or Oola
Due to Doon's involvement in the Co. U16 Hurling Final (they lost to Na Piarsaigh) the football semi v Fr. Casey's has not taken place. Both are top quality teams. Fr. Casey's defeated us in Round 1 and we pipped Oola in Round 7. Forewarned therefore is forearmed and we will have to fire on all cyclinders if we’re to become the top U16 football team in the county.
Training is on today Wednesday from 6p.m. to 7p.m.
Note: with Fr. Casey's contesting the Premier Minor Football Champion-ship Final (v St. Kieran's) on Sunday October 16th, further delay for the U16 Final looks likely.
U14 Football Division 1 Co. League Final
Newcastle West..............1-3
Monaleen........................2-4
This team's unbeaten run in county competitions came to an end in Askeaton on Sunday evening. With a few injury problems before the start, the team lined out with players in unfamiliar positions. Monaleen took full advantage, started very well and hit us for 1-3 in the first six minutes. Eventually the boys got to grips with Monaleen's strong running and direct style and started to counter attack. A great run by Eoin Sheridan led to him scoring a great goal. Liam McCartan added a point and it looked as if we were getting back in the game. Unfortunately a lapse in concentration let the city team in for another goal before half time. They quickly added a point and led by 2-4 to 1-1 at half time. Newcastle West put in a huge effort in the second half but could not break through the packed Monaleen defence. A defence splitting run by Eoin Sheridan almost secured another goal but the crossbar denied him. Diarmuid Kelly came into the forwards in the second half and was a constant threat. We added two points but could not close the gap and ran out of time to leave Monaleen to celebrate at the end. In a disappointing performance on the day we had outstanding displays from Tom D’Arcy and Evin Sheridan. Despite the setback the big prize of a County Championship is still available for this team as they will have a semi-final in the next few weeks. Having already qualified for the hurling county final this team still has opportunities to collect more silverware this season. However a big effort will be needed to succeed.
Team: Conor O'Sullivan, Seamus Hurley, Eoin Sheridan, Tom D’Arcy, Darren O’Doherty, Sean Ivess, Craig Blenkensop, William Hurley, Liam McCartan, Shane Lee, Brian Hurley, Colm Foley, Gerald Griffin, Cormac Long, Sean Murphy, Diarmuid Kelly, Darragh O'Shea, Adam Harrington, Aidan O’Con-nor, Conor Walton, Adam Corbett, Garvin Crowley, Caleb O'Shea, Ryan Sheehan.
U13 Hurling
This team had a useful challenge against Adare on Monday night as they await resumption of their championship. There was some great play in this game and some excellent scores. Dwayne McCoy was outstanding in goal as the game finished in a draw. Newcastle West 1-4, Adare 2-1.
U12 Hurling Challenge v Roscrea
We took on Roscrea in a challenge game on our route to Croke Park last Saturday morning. Whether it was the early start, or the fact we stopped training some weeks ago, we were completely off the pace in the first half. Our hosts were first to the ball and we were in trouble in a lot of positions. Losing key defenders Lee Woulfe and Oisin Brennan did not help our cause either. We were well down at half time, but put up a mighty battle in the second half.
Inspired by the outstanding Jack Downey, we improved all over the field. Thomas Griffin and Niall McAuliffe held sway in the half back line, while Micheal Collins and Brian Curtin excelled at midfield. Our forwards still found it tough up front, but we eventually got through for some good scores from the hard working Mikey Carroll. We had a panel of 25 players on the day, all of whom played their part. We gave ourselves too much to do in the second half, but the performance was very good against top class opposition.
The result certainly did not dampen the mood, as we made our way on to Dublin. Having been fed and watered by our generous hosts in Roscrea, we eventually pulled in to Croke Park at around 3pm. We then got the guided tour which took up almost two hours with our group having many questions for our very patient and very witty tour guide. After that the lads did some shopping at the Elvery's Sports store before we eventually left the stadium at around 6.30pm.
We stopped at a restaurant on the way home where the lads had burgers, chips etc., before the long journey home.
Some very good hurling played in Roscrea was then matched by some very bad singing on the bus home, so it was quite a relief when we eventually got back into town around 10pm, after a great day out!
Many thanks to Mike and Derry for organising the trip, and also to the many parents who made the trip with us. Also a big thank you to all the players (50 in all) who travelled and gave a great account of themselves on and off the pitch.
Mentors at Roscrea GAA Club and Croke Park staff were very complimentary about the way the boys conducted themselves, and they were excellent ambassadors for the club and the town. Well done to all.
U12 panel against Roscrea: Darragh Enright, Ben Finnegan, Michael Collins Jack Nash, Niall McAuliffe, Lee Woulfe, Brian Curtin, Thomas Griffin, Mikey Carroll, Jack Downey, Gavin Lane, Oisin Brennan, Adam Flynn, Caolan Dooley, Ross Donovan, Cian Searles, Blayne Aherne, Conor Finnucane, Warren Coughlan, Martin McCoy, Sean Walton, Cormac Nash, Dylan O’Connell, Darragh Collins, Charlie Doherty.
The U12 hurling season comes to a close, with a Finals Day this weekend at the Gaelic Grounds. All players will be contacted re travel arrangements.
Under 10 Trip to Croke Park
The players certainly enjoyed the trip to Croker on Saturday last. Along the way they took on their contemporaries from Roscrea and gained valuable experience of standards in the Premier County. Overall between travelling on primary routes, experiencing hurling at its best, testing out their vocal chords musically, eating, touring Croker and shopping, all had a most busy, varied and enjoyable day. Well done to the mentors who organised the trip, to the parents who travelled, and to the players themselves.
Under 8 Hurling Challenge
Newcastle West v Drom Broadford
Dromcollogher was the venue on Saturday morning last and conditions were grand if a little muddy! The 7 year olds played on a pitch nearest the road stand side, while the U8s operated farther up, also stand side. With all the players in action all the time, they really enjoyed themselves and gained valuable game experience.
Panel: Paudie Kelly, Eddie Ward, Michael Blasnev, John Whelan, Emmet Richter, John O’Grady, Donal Bourke, Jack O’Connor, Con Hayes, Tyler Clancy, Gearoid O’Leary, Oisin Collins, James Lyons, Ethan Kirwan, Sean Geraghty, Jamie O’Regan, Oisin O’Regan, Jamie Healy, Dylan Scanlon.
Training continues on Wednesdays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 10am.
Lottery
Last Monday's draw took place at Barry's. The numbers drawn were 14, 17, 29 and 30. The jackpot of €18,600 was not won. The five €40 lucky dip winners were: Kevin O’Callaghan, c/o The Dollar, Peggy Carmody c/o Denis Noonan, Catriona Roche, c/o K. McCoy, Victoria Brouder c/o Barry's, Cillian Penchan, c/o Declan O’Connor. This week's jackpot is €18,800. The draw is at the Central on Monday next, October 10th, at 10.30pm. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery.
