NEWCASTLE WEST GAA

INTERMEDIATE
COUNTY HURLING
CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 3
Newcastle West...........1-9
Ballybrown................2-14
Croagh was the venue on Sunday last and Mike Meade refereed. It was without doubt our worst display this year, and we have to thank keen rivals Knockaderry who beat Bohermore-Ballybricken that we’re into the quarter final, where we’ll struggle to beat Effin unless we rediscover the form that deserted us in Croagh.
Everything about our play in the first half was poor and we were 0-3 to 2-7 behind at half time. It could have been worse as we were 0-0 to 2-5 behind, but rallied a bit in the final nine minutes to put 0-3 on the board and limit Bally to 0-2.
We improved in the second half, outscoring the city team 1-6 to 0-7 and keeping our fingers crossed that the result from Knockaderry v Bohermore-Ballybricken would favour us! It did! So, all in all a below par performance by the team as a whole, with only a few players – Stephen Kelly, Timmy Nix and Michael Dowling – playing anywhere near their potential and the majority struggling with their game; though to give credit where credit is due, one and all kept battling away to the final whistle. Hopefully, in the two weeks left before we face up to last year's county junior champions, we’ll rediscover the fire and form that was in evidence against Knockaderry in Round 2 and at other times during the year and push on to a semi final place. As Barack Obama (who's in a similar predicament) once famously said “Is Feidir linn.”
Team: Ollie McCoy, Michael Dowling, Maurice Murphy, James Kelly, Mike Mulcahy, Martin Hennessy, Paul Hannon, Mark Kelly, Sean Browne, Niall Enright, Stephen Nix. (1-0), Shane Kelly, Sean Neville (0-2), Mike McMahon (0-4), Stephen Kelly. Subs: Timmy Nix, Mike Quilligan (0-2), Andrew Curtin (0-1), Damian Garrihy, Ray Massey, Tommy Kelleher, Kieran McMahon, Brian O’Doherty, Aaron McCarthy, Jamie Lee.
The quarter final is scheduled for Sunday August 21st and training continues.

COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL
CHAMPIONSHIP
ROUND 4
Newcastle West v Bally-landers
Saturday next at 7pm in Feenagh are the arrange-ments. Bally are one of our bogey teams, but since we’ve beaten another of our bogey teams - Drom Broadford - in our unbeaten 3 game run there's no reason why we wouldn’t take another major scalp! A game to look forward to and an opportunity to see two of Limerick's best footballers - Stephen Kelly and Tom Lee - in opposition.

WEST JUNIOR B FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP ROUNDS 3 AND 4
Newcastle West...........2-9
Knockaderry.............. 2-2
The Bog Garden, Rath-keale, was the venue for last Monday's game and Billy Phillips refereed. A bit of a wind blew up into the right corner where the windmill used to be. We led 1-5 to 1-1 at half time. However, Knockaderry had closed the gap to 1 point, 1-6 to 2-2, by the end of the third quarter. Under threat, our lads put on a spurt, manufactured a handy 1-3, put up the shutters and made it full points from 3 games played. There were good displays all round.
Team: James Stack, Daithi Nash, Michael Culhane, Seoirse Joyce, Karl Linehan, Tommy Kelleher, Tony Aherne, Ger Cremin, Mark O'Sullivan, Mark Doherty (1-1), Declan Brouder (0-4), Ronan Kelleher (1-1), Jonathan Carey, Conor Fitzgerald (0-1), Sean Gleeson (0-1). Subs: Keith Power, Karl Hayes, Tony Doyle, Sean Corbett.
On Sunday next at 7pm we play St. Kieran's in Tournafulla in Round 4.

PREMIER UNDER 16 HURLING COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD SEMI FINAL
Newcastle West v Clau-ghaun
The field is the venue on this Wednesday and there's a 7pm thrown in. With many of the U16s indifferent to Setanta/Cuchulainn's favourite game, we’ll struggle to field. However, the lads who are committed are skilled practitioners and will hope to give the city lads a good run for their money and maybe sneak a victory. Fingers are crossed and support is appreciated.

COUNTY UNDER 14 HURLING DIVISION 1 CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER FINAL
Hurling Playoff
Newcastle West.........5-18
Kilmallock...................2-3
After mixed results in the group stages over the last few months, we were drawn against Kilmallock in the knockout stages. With the game at home and most of the panel available we were hopeful of producing a good per-formance. Our opponents were somewhat under-strength for this game but such was the quality of play from the Newcastle West boys that any team would have struggled to compete with them. The early minutes were even with both teams scoring good goals. However, Newcastle West got on top in all areas and dominated until just before half time when Kilmallock scored a breakaway goal to leave the half time score Newcastle West 3-7, Kilmallock 2-2. Brian Hurley was the main scorer with 2-4 in this half, with Colm Foley getting 1-1. We lost centre back William Hurley before half time with an injury but captain Eoin Sheridan moved into his position and was equally effective.
The second half was very one sided with Newcastle West taking control from the throw in when Liam McCartan ran at the defence and scored a great point. Our backs were well in control with Darren O’Doherty making some inspirational high catches and Shane Lee managing to outplay two Kilmallock forwards for most of the game as we withdrew one of our defenders in a sweeping role. Cormal Long and Liam McCartan were dominant at midfield and most of the forwards got on the scoresheet. Diarmuid's Kelly's unstoppable goal was one of the highlights of the game as were the great points by subs Adam Cor-bett and Adam Harrington. Sean Murphy and Gerald Griffin worked very hard throughout the game to create opportunities for the other forwards as did Caleb O'Shea and Conor Walton. Brian Hurley brought his score for the evening to 3-5 before he went off. The defence deserve great credit for holding Kilmallock to 1 point in the second half, with Seamus Hurley and Tom D’Arcy cutting out many attacks and Sean Ivess in control on the wing. Conor O'Sullivan was very safe in goal and continued his good form. We have now qualified for a county semi final where we will play a very strong Murroe Boher team who were Under 13 Division 1 champions last year. Training will need to step up a level if we are to progress any further.
Team: Conor O'Sullivan, Seamus Hurley, Darren O’Doherty, Tom D’Arcy, Eoin Sheridan, William Hurley, Shane Lee, Cormac Long, Liam McCartan, Caleb O'Shea, Sean Murphy, Diarmuid Kelly, Gerald Griffin, Brian Hurley, Colm Foley. Subs: Sean Ivess, Conor Walton, Adam Harrington, Adam Corbett, Garvin Crowley, Cathal Daly.

UNDER 14 FOOTBALL
Our group game against Mungret is likely to take place in the next week with next Sunday August 14th a possibility.

UNDER 13 HURLING
We also have a back match in this competition against St. Patrick's to play in the next week or so.

UNDER 13 FOOTBALL
The eagerly awaited semi final replay against Monaleen is on Wednesday 17th August at 7pm in Monaleen.

UNDER 12
Training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5.30pm - 6.30pm. There's a break from games at present.

UNDER 10
Training is on Wednesdays from 6.30pm - 7.30pm and on Saturdays from 10am - 11.30am.

UNDER 8 HURLING GO GAMES CLUSTER BLITZ
Tournafulla hosted a 3 team - ourselves, Knock-aderry and Tour - blitz on Friday evening last and all the players really enjoyed it, getting plenty of game time on a fine evening. We travelled with 12 players (many were away on holidays, divided the 12 into 2 teams, as did Tour and Knockaderry, and played away until darkness fell. We won all our games, playing good hurling, and showing that the twice weekly training sessions (Wednesdays 6.30 -7.30pm and Saturdays 10 -11.301a) are bearing fruit.
Panel: Oisin Collins, Sean Geraghty, James Lyons, Tyler Clancy, Donal Bourke, Cian Hayes, Dylan Scanlon, Jamie Regan, Eddie Ward, Jack O’Connor, Paudie Kelly, John Whelan.

MUNSTER U21 HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Limerick....................4-20
Cork...........................0-27
A fantastic game at the Gaelic Grounds on Wednesday last and a brilliant win that sent Limerick's success starved supporters into ecstasies. Galway are next in the All Ireland semi final on Saturday August 21st, probably in Ennis and the news to hand is that Kevin Downes is likely to miss out due to a hand injury.

GOLF CLASSIC
Support is appreciated for the club's second annual fundraiser which takes place at the Newcastle Golf Club on Friday next August 19th. Teams of three cost €150, which also includes dinner, and tee boxes are available at €50 each. All profits go towards the cost of the all weather pitch which is proving a huge asset to both the GAA and camogie clubs, particularly under-age. Maurice McAuliffe, Denis Noonan, Sean Roche, Neilius Sheehy, John Collins, Peter Curtin, Julian Lyons and Donal Lynch are the people to contact.

LOTTERY
The draw on Tuesday August 2nd took place at the Silver Dollar. The numbers drawn were 11, 19, 23 and 26. The jackpot of €16,800 was not won. The five €40 lucky dip winners were: Jimmy McCoy, Castleview, Helena McCoy, c/o Con Sheehy, Mary Byrne, c/o Pat Condon, Paddy McCoy, Gerry Butler c/o Sean Roche.
The draw on Monday August 8th took place at the Old Mill. The numbers drawn were 1, 5, 17 and 19. The jackpot of €17,000 was not won. The five €40 lucky dip winners were: John Daly, c/o the Silver Dollar, Paddy McCoy, Paddy McMahon c/o Goodfellas, Mike Hayden, c/o Sean Roche, Liam Sheehy, c/o Con Sheehy. This week's jackpot is €17,200. The draw takes place at the Courtenay Lodge on Monday August 15th at 11pm. The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lottery.
