Spotless Town Center

A win and a draw leave hurlers in good shape for Friday's county championship round 3
Intermediate Hurling West Championship Round 1
Newcastle West ...........2-8
Tournafulla ................0-13
Drom was the venue on Tuesday 22nd May and Michael Mann refereed. The game had plenty of good hurling, it was well contested and close all through and we just about scraped it in the end. A slow start saw us 0-0 to 0-5 behind at 8 minutes, but 2 goals, the first and the second well taken by Stephen Kelly left us in 2-3 to 0-7 ahead at half time. Tournafulla outscored us 0-6 to 0-5 in the second half but never regained the lead and we were relieved to hear the final whistle as we went into the quarter final! Team: Allie McCoy, James Kelly, Maurice Murphy, Evan Egan, Tommy Kelleher, Martin Hennessy, Niall Enright, Niall Kelleher, Mike Mulcahy, Paul Hannon (0-2), Mike McMahon (0-2), Mike Quilligan (0-2), Aaron McCarthy, Stephen Kelly (1-1), Sean Neville (0-1). Subs: Ronan Kelleher, Jamie Lee and Damien Garrihy.

Intermediate Co League
Newcastle Wet ........1-11
Cappamore .............0-14
A point from Tony O’Connor with the last puck of the game gave us a draw at the field on Monday last. It was a fair outcome to a game that had a lot of frees, a lot of scores from frees, wasn’t ‘dirty’ and was refereed by Sean Hartnett. The game was close on the scoreboard for most of the hour and the teams were level at half time! We opened a 0-2 gap, 1-6 to 0-7, 4 minutes into the 2nd half when Stephen Kelly goaled from a goalkeeping mistake, but the gap didn’t remain open long, and it was Cappamore in the lead by 0-1, a minute into time added on. They kept that lead until the final seconds when Tony struck the equaliser over the town goal crossbar from out on the dressing rooms touchline. Plenty of effort, far too many frees making the game very stop-start, a result that left both teams happy enough!
Team: Allie McCoy, James Kelly, Maurice Murphy, Tommy Kelleher, Stephen Nix, Sean Browne, Mike Mulcahy, Kieran McMahon, Mike Quilligan (0-1), Mike McMahon (0-5), Michael Martin, Stephen Kelly (1-3), Tony O’Connor (0-1), Aaron McCarthy (0-1). Subs: Tom Ryan, Damian Garrihy, Thomas Quilligan, Mark Kelly and Jamie Lee.

Intermediate Hurling Co Championship Round 2
Newcastle West v Ballybricken/Bohermore
Friday at, 7pm in Kilmallock are the arrangements. Without setting the world alight with the quality of our hurling we’ve been holding our own in most games, including a West Senior Championship v Granagh/Ballingarry (we lost). Ourselves and Knockaderry drew 0-9 each in round 1 and Knockaderry play Monaleen, big winners over Ballybricken.

Junior B Football West League Round 4
Newcastle West ........0-21
Drom-Broadford .......4-7
10 minutes into the above game played at the field on Wednesday May 23rd we were 0-2 to 2-4 behind and seemingly heading for a heavy defeat. How we recovered to put 0-21 on the board ( a record for a Newcastle West football/hurling team.) may go into our Club history (when it's finally written) as one of the greatest comebacks by a Newcastle West team and if it does the names of Declan Brouder, Keith Power will be writ charge as it was their scoring prowess Declan (0-8), Keith (0-6) that kept our hopes of league success alive. Of course, it wasn’t a 2 man show and there were excellent displays (and scores) by many players as we turned the game round to lead by 0-5, 0-18 to 2-7, 20 minutes into the second half. At this stage coasting, and with the winning post in sight, we nearly lost the game, conceding the 2-2 that returned the lead to Drom at 53. In the crisis it was Declan (0-1) and Keith (0-2) with their point scoring prowess that rescued us and gave us the precious points. All round a remarkable game!
Team: Willie Kavanagh, Eoin Normoyle, Michael O’Leary, Gavin Rediy, Conor Fitzgerald, Chris Neville (0-2), Keith Power( 0-6), Declan Brouder (0-7), James O'Sullivan (0-2), Sean Gleeson, Jonathon Carey (0-2). Subs: Ronan Kelleher.

UNDER 10
Thursday 31st May football v Drom-Broadford in Drom 6.45pm
The last few weeks have been very active for our under 10 hurlers and footballers. In hurling we played a blitz in Tournafulla where we had two teams and each team played against Feenagh Kilmeedy, Feohanagh and the losts Tournafulla and were successful in all six games. Then last week we hosted St. Kieran's, Tournafulla, Knockaderry and Feenagh Kilmeedy. Again we had two teams and finished the day with four wins a defeat and a draw in our six games. In football we had a blitz in Abbeyfeale where we again had two teams and played Fr. Caseys, Knockaderry, Feenagh Kilmeedy and Gerald Griffin's. On the day we finished with 5 wins and one defeat. We also took on Mungret in a challenge game in Newcastle West where we recovered from a three goal defeat to win a fantastic game on the score 3-2 to 3-1. As shown throughout our games to date the lads have a never say die attidude and no little skill.
Team: Michael Blaskiv, Jack Duggan, Oisin Enright, Eddie Ward, Mark Carey, Evan McMahon, Donal Bourke, Michael Cremin, Liam McMahon, Andrew Mortell, Ciaran McQuaid, Padraig Walsh, Joe Woulfe, Leon Barry, Conor Walker, Evan Sheehan, Ethan Hurley, Oisin O'Sullivan, Ronan Mullane, Paudie Kelly, Riail McGuinn, Michael Nash, Todd Donovan, Jack O’Connor, Ruadhan O’Connor, Morgan Sheehan, Mikey McNamara, Robert Bourke and Tyler Clancy. Training to date has been once a week on Saturday mornings. The management team of Derry McMahon, Eoin Creminn, Ken Mortell and Brendan Duggan are currently putting a schedule in place for the coming months where the frequency and benefits of training will increase. Also our annual summer camp will take place from 2nd July to 6th and forms will be available at training. Our annual walk and bake sale to raise funds for Juvenile Club activities will take place on 17th June and all help will be appreciated.

Intercounty Senior Hurling Munster Championship Quarter Final
Limerick ...................1-19
Tipperary .................2-20
Limerick delighted those who travelled, those who followed the action on TV and those who tuned in to Liam Aherne on Live 95FM with an outstanding courageous and skilful display at Semple Stadium on Sunday last. Hopefully they can continue the form (and maybe improve on it) in the qualifiers and progress to the latter stages of the championship through the back door as the teams of 2007 and 2009 did! Fingers are crossed! The intermediates were well beaten by Tipperary on Saturday evening in Nenagh. Sean Browne didn’t get a run! Courtenay Boys pupil and club under 14 Brian Curtin played in the Primary Game as did Alice O’Connor, sister of U10 Jack! Well done to both.

Primary Schools
West Championship
The Courtenay Boys NS team qualified for the Division 1 Hurling Final and will meet Rathkeale Boys School on Monday June 11th at Neville Park. The winners will receive the Noel Liston Cup, named in honour of the late and well known teacher in Rathkeale School ( a native of Knockaderry, living in Killoughteen, Newcastle West) who gave fantastic service to Gaelic games in general and to Cumann na mBunscoil in particular and whose sons Michael, Thomas and Patrick played underage for our club.

CLUB LOTTO
The draw on Monday last took place at Ned Lynch's. The numbers drawn were 10, 14, 28 and 29. The jackpot of €5,800 was not won. €40 lucky dip winners were Grainne O’Connor c/o Kay McCoy, Donal O’Connor c/o Con Sheehy, the Moloney family 46 Sharwood, Eamonn Lowe c/o Lee's Bar and Patsy Markham c/o Denis Noonan. This week's jackpot is €6,000. Te draw takes place at Maureen's Bar (formerly Beckets) on Tuesday May 5th at 10.30pm (a change from the usual Monday due to the Bank Holiday). The club thanks all who are supporting, promoting and hosting the lotto.

Sympathy
All in the club extend sympathy to his wife Betty, son David, daughter Mai, brother Paddy and the Sammon family on the death of Davy Sammon, St. Ita's Gardens. The late Davy was a prominent hrler with the club (and a competitive, capable footballer also) for many years, winning a west minor hurling medal in 1965 when his team mates included Billy Nash, Dan Kennedy, the late John Doody (brother of Tom), Paul Dunworth, Mike Cremin, the late Kevin O’Donnell (who gave outstanding service to our club as player/mentor for many years and later to Drom-Broadford), Tom Downes, Dicky Liston, the late Denis Leonard, Joe Nash (brother of former club chairs Mike and Steve), Seanie Mulvihill, Matt McCoy, Billy Power ( a quality goalie in his minor days and famous subsequently for his big match commentaries) especially the 1973 All Ireland Final Limerick v Kilkenny. That talented team also contested the west minor football final of 1965 losing to Athea by a point and of course Billy, Dan and Paul played county minor. The late Davy also wore the county jersey winning his place on the Co U21 hurling team of 1969 when he lined out at wing back. Work in England post 69' interrupted his hurling career but he was back in Newcastle West for the West Senior Hurling campaign of ’76 when after a surprise semi final win over high flying Tournafulla, Killeedy put an end to the teams adventures with a decisive win in the West Final in Drom! The ’76 seniors continued to hurl for many years after with little success, but with plenty of commitment, enjoyment and optimism. The late Davy was indeed one of the club's most prominent hurlers in that era, a fearless, skilful, competitive and versatile player guaranteed to give 100% every time he pulled on the famous black and white jersey. Older brother Paddy was of course also an outstanding hurler/footballers, Davys son David was an excellent hurler with the club up to 21, while nephews Mike, Manus and Danny were also players of distinction for many years. Sympathy is also extended to the Lee family, Connolly Terrace on the death of the great Tossie, for many years proprietor of the famous, iconic cinema at Maiden Street (latchfords to the senior citizens among us) where many of us had our first encounter with the wonderful world of silver screen-and the actors, actresses, and characters who were our heroes, heroines until we get to sense! May Davy and Tossie, prominent hurler and great cinema proprietor, rest in peace.

Under 12 hurling Round 3
Newcastle West.........1-01
St. Kieran's..................2-1
This game was played at the field on Thursday evening in fine weather with plenty of supporters cheering on both sides in a keenly contested local derby. Despite the low score-line this was a very enjoyable and entertaining match. Newcastle West had most of the possession but found the St. Kieran's goalkeeper in unbeatable form until Caolan Dooley displayed great skill to double on a high ball and send it to the net late in the game. The young Magpies also saw many long range shots go just wide and if this team continues to improve as they have done so far this season they will match an team they play. Our own goalkeeper Mikey O’Connor had an outstanding game and looks like a natural in this difficult position. Dara Collins, Oisin Brennan and Gavin Lane are excellent defenders and kept out many St. Kieran's attacks, Cormac Nash, Dylan Singh and Brian Foley fought for every ball and turned defence into attack. Sean Walton, Luke Gleeson and Brian Nix are fine strikers of a sliothar. Daniel Normoyle, Ross Donovan and Blayne Aherne kept the St. Kieran's defence busy all evening. Dylan Connell, Conor Finucane and Cian Daly got stuck in at every opportunity. Warren Coughlan, Cian Searles and Charlie Doherty put in great work for the team. We done to all players and we now await details of our opponents in the next phase of this competition. Thanks to Pat Molyneaux who was a firm but very fair referee.

Under 13 Football
Round 3
Thursday 31st May in Dromcollogher v Drom Broadford at 6.45.
