Pallaskenry GAA Club Weekly Notes

Posted on: 3 March, 2009

Our annual club awards and presentation of medals dinner will took place last Friday in O’Grady's Restaurant. Thanks to the organising committee and the restaurant staff for a wonderful evening and enjoyable meal. The county board was represented by Owen Hayes, Treasurer and Eibhear O’Dea, County Development Officer, and current Limerick Senior Hurling Captain Wayne McNamara from Adare was also on hand to help with the presentations. Congratulations to all the club members who received awards on the night, first up were the double winning junior hurlers who received medals after winning the City Junior B League & Championship last year. Club Merit Awards went to Brian Barrett, Paul Nunan & Barry Lynch. Junior Hurling Manager Johnny Dunne was honoured for leading the club to the 3-in-a-row City Junior B Hurling Championships. John Hayes was recognised for his immense contribution to Pallaskenry GAA Club where he was involved in setting up the Bord Na nOg twenty three years ago. In more recent times John has been Secretary of the City Division Bord Na nOg until it ceased to be as new structures were put in place. Player of the Year Awards went to Daniel Hannon (Most Improved Player), Mossie Sheehan (Young Player), Shauna Nunan (Ladies Footballer) & Padraig O’Connell (Junior Player of the Year). Finally Club Person Of The Year went to a most deserving Geraldine McMahon.

Numbers drawn on the 25/2/09 were: 1, 7, 19 and 27. There was no winner. Lucky dips of €25 were drawn by: Rita Fitzgerald, John Byrnes Rathkeale, Gary Gleeson, Denis Kelly Askeaton, Josephine Dolan, Miah Coughlan c/o Karen, Maria Staff, Mairead Seery Mungret. Sellers’ prize of €50 was won by Jackie Howard and in house winner of €20 was Paul Nunan. This week's jackpot is EUR20,000 and the draw will take place in The Corner House on Wednesday March 4th @ 9:30pm. Tickets are available online @, from all local shops & pubs and from committee members at a cost of EUR2 each or three tickets for EUR5.

The Limerick GAA Development draw has been revamped for this year with the prize fund increased to over €415,000 with a top prize each month of a new car or €18,000. Other prizes range in value from .250 to €5,000 including foreign holidays and also special prizes of an overnight stay in Jury's Croke Park and tickets to the All Ireland Hurling & Football finals. All of this for just EUR10 per month or EUR100 for the year and 50% of the money collected is retained by the club and is still seen as the main source of income for the club throughout the year. Pallaskenry GAA members have been winners on numerous occasions including winning the top prize several times in the last few years. Last year Joe Keogh won EUR3000, Jerome O’Connell struck it lucky on three different occasions! Vinnie Fitzgerald was also a winner and last October Karen & Tony Staff won the top prize of EUR14000. We would like to thank everyone who has supported this draw which benefits GAA at every level throughout the county. Collectors will be calling to each part of the parish over the coming weeks and anyone looking for further information should contact Geraldine McMahon on 0861646163. The first draw for 2009 will take place in The Corner House Bar, Pallaskenry on Friday March 6th.

The GAA are delighted to announce GAA 125 Schools Day on the 24th of April 2009. This day is to celebrate the founding of the GAA 125 years ago in primary schools right across the country. The GAA is encouraging all primary schools to get involved. The 24th of April is an opportunity for fun inside and out of the classroom.
"It is our sincere wish that our school children continue to enjoy gaelic games in a fun and safe environment and we greatly appreciate the continued work of teachers in making this happen. I hope that the entire school community will enjoy celebrating our 125th anniversary." Stated the President of the GAA Nickey Brennan at the launch in Croke Park.

The GAA 125 Schools Day can be celebrated in a number of ways.

- Pupils could wear their GAA colours (Club, School or County) to school.
- A past or present GAA personality could be invited to schools to talk to pupils.
-Teachers could use the GAA Ceim ar Aghaidh/Step Ahead resource to deliver a GAA themed lesson in any subject.
- Pupils could complete GAA projects and display them around the school.
- Use the Fun Do Coaching Resource to teach a gaelic games lesson.
- Play a gaelic games competition (hurling, gaelic football, camogie, handball or rounders.)
The Irish Times and The Sisk Group, who are also both celebrating anniversaries this year, have also teamed up with the GAA and Cumann na mBunscol to hold a photography competition for schools who participate in the day. A photo showing how the school celebrates the day can be e-mailed to:
"In 2009 The SISK Group celebrates 150 years in business. As a family business we appreciate the important contribution that the GAA have made to Ireland and the community and we are very happy to be involved in this celebration." Liam Nagle, CEO The SISK Group.
During 2009 we encourage all schools to celebrate GAA 125 through all the events that are happening throughout the year
