€19,000 in funding distributed to Sport in Mayo

Posted on: 20 June, 2011

Castlebar

At a recent Mayo Sports Partnership Board meeting almost €19,000 was allocated to 38 clubs / organisations in Mayo through both the Partnerships 2011 special participation and Bike Week grant schemes. In announcing the funding Chairman of the Sports Partnership Cllr Henry Kenny complimented the work being done on the ground by many volunteers in tough times.

“ Through this annual small grant scheme Mayo Sports Partnership recognises the unselfish contribution many sports volunteers, throughout the county, make towards improving the quality of life of all ” Cllr Kenny stated.

The aim of the Sports Partnership is to increase participation in sport / physical activity and it is envisaged that all projects will help to do just that particularly in disadvantaged sectors of the population. This year the Partnership was able to distribute €5,000, through funding from the Department of Transport, for recreational Bike Week events which take place from the 18th – 26th June.

“I am delighted to see that this years grant scheme has encouraged groups to set up local Meet and Train Groups where people can walk , run or cycle in a sociable fun setting.” stated Sports Co-ordinator Charlie Lambert.

The Partnership which comprises of interested agencies, Sports and Community Forum representatives, is funded by the Irish Sports Council and is a sub-office of the Mayo County Development Board. For funding under this scheme applicants need to show that the suggested project will increase participation and is sustainable.

As well as funding mainstream sports, this year the scheme has funded initiatives including a Womens Soccer Initiative through Claremorris Soccer Club, a project to increase participation amongst men aged 35 – 65 in the Sean Duffy Community Centre in Ardnaree and a drive by Parke GAA Club to increase womens fitness in the area through weekly classes ending in a local 5K fun run / walk.

Since 2005 the Partnership has brought an overall investment of close to €3 million to developing sport and recreation within the county. Many projects / initiatives involving pre-schools all the way up to older people have benefited from this significant investment mainly through the Irish Sports Councils direct funding. The above figure does not include the very significant input of partner agencies on the board such as Mayo County Council, Mayo VEC, HSE West, GMIT, Leader Companies, Udaras na Gaeltachta, Mayo Education Centre and other stakeholders.

Any further information on the above can be obtained by contacting Mayo Sports Partnership at 094-9047025 or by logging on to www.mayosports.ie
