1. Official Opening of Great Western Greenway Westport to Achill

The Great Western Greenway Westport - Achill 42K, Britain and Irelands longest piece of off road walking / cycling route, will be launched by an Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister Michael Ring, Junior Minister Tourism, Transport and Sport on Friday July 29th. The launch will kick off in Westport at 2pm, with a brief stopover in Newport for fun and entertainment and in Mulranny and on to finish in Achill. Come and join in the fun and celebration along the route. For more information see www.greenway.ie


2. Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival

The 2nd GOT Adventure Festival is scheduled to take place on the weekend of the 23rd / 24th and 25th September. A centre piece event will be the inaugural Great Western Greenway 10K Run / Walk to enter log on to www.runireland.ie or log on to www.mayosports.ie . Other events will include a Splash and Dash Duathlon for 6th Class Primary School Children in the area, Skateboarding competitions and events, Inter Workplace Canoe Polo Competition, Come and Try It Adventure in Westport House including Zorbing, Orienteering, Raft Building, Canoeing etc and on the Sunday the very popular Westport Festival of Sport Fun Day which this year will incorporate Westport Uniteds Centenary Year Celebrations. 3. Ballindine Cycle Meet and Train Group

Are you living in the Claremorris, Ballindine, Garrymore area? Would you like to take up cycling but don’t know where to start? Why not join the Ballindine Cycle meet & train group tonight Monday 25th and every Monday during August? Participants are asked to Meet outside Marian House, Ballindine at 6.45pm with a start time of 7pm
Distances covered will be 5km, 7km & 10km.

The group will be led by Paul Kilcourse Bike Clinic Castlebar, national cyclist with 25 years of cycling experience. Learn Practical tips on cycling from Paul as well as getting some exercise in a fun non competitive way.For further information contact Mayo Sports Partnership 0949047025.

4. Fit4life 5K Summer and Autumn Series

The 5k series was held on June 21st Castlebar, June 28th Ballinrobe and July 5th Claremorris including Barbeque evening.

There were 270 participants in total with excellent feedback and bringing valuable revenue to Mayo AC to facilitate the 4 fit4life groups now under their umbrella, Claremorris, Castlebar, Ballinrobe and now just recently Ballyhaunis.

Another Series is being organized for Autumn. 3 Tuesdays starting August 30th.sept 6th and Sept 13th.



5. Moy Sports Forum (Ballina) Goes from Strength to Strength

Set up as a local committee of community and agency representatives the forum identifies the needs and issues in regards to sport and physical activity participation amongst the Parkside, Cluain Na Ri and Greenhills estates. It then, along with support from the Sports Partnership and Ballina Town Council, seeks to address the issues through programmed activities utilising the recently developed recreation facilities available to the community.

The forum has just recently facilitated soccer tournaments for teenagers and youth at risk groups which will continue into the Autumn. Other activities will include a Salsa / Zumba Dance Programme for Young Women and a come and try it event for members of the travelling community. A walking programme and a neighbourhood day are also on the menu for the coming months. For more information contact Anne Ronayne at 094-9047022.


6. Goal to Work 2

Follow on from Goal to Work 1 this training initiative involves a 14 week, 2 day a week, classroom and coaching programme for 12 jobseekers. A collaborative project which is co-ordinated by the Mayo North East Leader Partnership, Mayo Sports Partnership and Mayo County Development Board, the aim is to have a team of coaches ,who will assist with sports programmes involving the Moy Sports Forum, utilising the local authority developed facilities in the Ballina estates.4 places on the programme will be allocated to GAA, Rugby and Soccer with the local development officers in all codes co-ordinating a coaching placement programme in schools and local communities. It is hoped that applications will be sought through advertisements in the local press at the end of August with interviews taking place in early September. 7. Sports and Disability Summer Camp

Mayo Sports Partnership hosted a Sports Summer Camp for children with a disability from the 18th – 22nd July in An Sportslann Castlebar.
The camp was aimed at Children with a disability their family and friends. The camp consisted of various sports with each day having a Theme of a different sport as well as lots of fun games, Skill, balance, coordination elements to the camp. The participants were aged from 7 – 14 with 20 children in total attending the camp.
The degrees of ability ranged from physical, learning and behavioral disabilities. Volunteers from both the Sports partnership and enable Ireland helped out for the week and made sure that every child got the best out of the week. The camp has proved to be huge successes with lots of new faces this year which will also feed in to our Saturday club come the autumn.













8. Funding Scheme for Boxing Clubs


A one-off grant of €1.25 million to improve facilities at boxing clubs, and in particular to provide accommodation for female boxers, has been announced by Michael Ring, the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport.

The special allocation is being administered by the Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA).

“This special allocation is a fitting gesture to mark the centenary of the IABA and recognises that boxing is by far Ireland's most successful Olympic sport,” Minister Ring said.

“It also acknowledges the fact that many boxing clubs operate in facilities which are in poor condition and lack basic facilities. This special allocation is an important step in helping to ensure that young people will be able to train in decent facilities which are fit for purpose.”

9. Irish Sports Council Publishes Irish Sports Monitor Report 2009

The report, written by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) on behalf of the Council, measures adult participation in sport and physical activity and compares it with the previously published information from 2007 & 2008. The report shows that there were increases in the levels of physical activity in 2009, a recovery from 2008 which was badly affected by the onset of recession. The proportion of adults who actively participated in sport rose significantly between 2008 and 2009, from 30.8% to 33.5%.The proportion who walked regularly also went up, from 57.5% to 60.5%.Overall swimming remained the most popular activity (7.2%) ahead of personal exercise (5.8%) andsoccer (5.6%). Soccer (10.7%) and golf (8.1%) were the most popular activities for men, while swimming(8.5%) and personal exercise (7.1%) were most popular among womenWalking and cycling as a mode of transport contribute substantially to physical activity, with 45.7% and11.2% of adults doing each regularly. Students, city dwellers, single people and younger people areparticularly likely to walk and cycle for transport.The proportion of the population that is effectively sedentary fell significantly from 18.2% in 2007 to15.5% in 2009




10. Upcoming Events


International Day Sunday September 4th from 2-5pm An Sportlann Castlebar

This day is being organised by the intercultural activity action group of Mayo County Development Board. On the day music food and sport will be showcased from varying ethnic communities who are living in Mayo and there will be particular emphasis on young men and women to attend the event. Sporting activities will include Soccer, Rugby, Basketball, Tug of war, Hurling and Cricket as well as some other indigenous sports such as Karen ‘Tess cross’. Sport & Disability Conference - ‘Physically active’

Activity, Accessibility & Healthy Lifestyle, Thursday 29th September 2011, in the TF Royal Hotel, Castlebar, 9.30 –4pm
The day is geared at all People with a disability as well as for parents, careers and oganisations so they too can understand the value, both to the individual with a disability and to themselves the benefits of being ‘Physically active’.
With the SIDO Programme going from strength to strength and participation level increasing all the time the day is an opportunity to sample some of the activities that are now accessible to people with a disability and to also move to the next level of understanding the benefits of exercise and the value of being ‘physically active’
