A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOUR: ROUND LIKE A SHOT
Round like a shot... Going to bed the other night, I noticed people in my shed stealin things. I phoned the police but was told there was no one in the area to help. The policeman said they would send someone over as soon as possible. I hung up.A minute later I rang again. 'Hello', I said, 'I called you a minute ago because there were people in my shed. You don't have to hurry now, because I've shot them.' Within five minutes there were half a dozen police cars in the area, plus helicopters and an armed response unit. They caught the burglars red-handed. One of the officers said: 'I thought you said you'd shot them.' To which I replied: 'I thought you said there was no one available.' Article by Tony Gladstone·
A professor wrote the words, “Woman without her man is nothing” on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly. The men wrote: “Woman: without her man, is nothing.” The women wrote:“Woman: Without her, man is nothing.”

GALWAY SAMARITANS RECRUITMENT:
As always at this time of year, I write to us seeking your support in advance of our volunteer recruitment drive. As you know, Samaritan volunteers are available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or despair including those which may lead to suicide.The Samaritans vision is for a society in which: (i) fewer people die by suicide; (ii) people are able to explore their feelings; (iii) people are able to acknowledge and respect the feelings of others.To do this we rely on members of the public to volunteer their time. In the current economic situation, increasing numbers of people are contacting us while volunteers of long standing are having to leave us because of changes in their circumstances. Two Information Meetings taking place on: Thursday, 16th February at 8.30 p.m. in the Carlton Hotel, Dublin Rd, Galway and on Thursday, 23rd February at 8.30pm in the Westwood House Hotel, Dangan, Galway. Anyone interested in volunteering for Samaritans should come along to one of these two meetings. Many thanks,Catherine, Deputy Director, Recruitment and Selection, Galway Samaritans
FEAST DAYS OF THE WEEK – THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS
Mon 6th Feb ST. PAUL MIKKI & COMPANIONS. (Japan) Died 1597.
Some of many Japanese martyrs. “The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason that I die” Paul Mikki
Tue 7th Feb St. Mel. (Great Britain) Died 489. Patron of Ardagh & Clonmacnois. One of family of 19 children, legend says that all of them entered the religious life. Mel was a nephew of St. Patrick. Helped him evangelise Ireland also reputed to have professed St. Brigid as a nun.
Wed 8th Feb St. Jerome Emiliani (Italy) 1481-1537. A careless and irreligious soldier from Venice, Jerome was captured in a skirmish at an outpost town and chained in a dungeon. In prison Jerome had a lot of time to think, and he gradually learned how to pray and became a priest. Later in life when plaque and famine fit Italy, Jerome cared for the sick & feed the hungry at his own expense. In 1532, he founded the Clerks Regular of Somasca setting up orphanages, shelters and a hospital. Jerome died in 1537 from a disease he caught while tending the sick. Patron of orphans and abandoned children.
Thu 9th Feb St. Miguel Cordero. (Ecuador) 1854-1910.
At age eight he was miraculously protected from being mauled by a wild bull. De La Salle Brother. First native ordained in Ecuador. Wrote his own textbooks and some were adopted by the government, and used throughout the country.
Fri 10th Feb St. Scholastica. O.S.B. 480-543.
Scholastica, the sister of St Benedict whom she was accustomed to visiting once a year. He would come down to meet her at a place on the monastery property, not far outside the gate. One day she came as usual and her saintly brother went with some of his disciples;
They spent the whole day praising God and talking of sacred things. As night fell they had supper together. Their spiritual conversation went on and the hour grew late. The holy nun said to her brother, “Please do not leave me tonight; let us go on until morning talking about the delights of the spiritual life.” “Sister,” he replied, “What are you saying? I simply cannot stay outside my cell.” When she heard her brother refuse her request, the holy woman joined her hands on the table, laid her head on them and began to pray. As she raised her head from the table, there were such brilliant flashes of lightning, such great peals of thunder and such a heavy downpour of rain that neither Benedict nor his brethren could stir across the threshold of the place where they had been seated. Sadly, he began to complain. “May God forgive you, sister. What have you done?” “Well, she answered, “I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and he did listen. So now go off, if you can, leave me and return to your monastery.” So it came about that they stayed awake the whole night, engrossed in their conversation about the spiritual life. Three days later, Benedict was in his cell. Looking up to the sky, he saw his sister's soul leave her body in the form of a dove, and fly up to the secret places of heaven. Rejoicing in her great glory, he thanked almighty God with hymns and words of praise. He then sent his brethren to bring her body to the monastery and lay it in the tomb he had prepared for himself. - From Dialogues by Pope Gregory the Great. Patron against rain and storms
Sat 11th Feb Our Lady of Lourdes.
On February 11, 1858, a young lady appeared to Bernadette Soubirous. This began a series of visions. During the apparition on March 25th, the lady identified herself with the words: “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Bernadette was a sickly child of poor parents. Their
practice of the Catholic faith was scarcely more than lukewarm. Bernadette could pray the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Creed. She also knew the prayer of the Miraculous Medal: “O Mary conceived without sin.” The humble virgin appeared to a humble girl and treated her with dignity. Through that humble girl, Mary revitalized and continues to revitalize the faith of millions of people. People began to flock to Lourdes from other parts of France and from all over the world. In 1862 Church authorities confirmed the authenticity of the apparitions and authorized the cult of Our Lady of Lourdes for the diocese. The Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes became worldwide in 1907.
