A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOUR: Fear of Flying
There was a religious woman who had to do a lot of travelling for her business. Flying made her very nervous, so she always took her Bible along with her.One time, she was sitting next to a man. When he saw her pull out her Bible, he gave a little chuckle and smirk and went back to what he was doing. After awhile, he turned to her and asked, "You don't really believe all that stuff in there do you?"The woman replied, "Of course I do. It is the Bible."He said, "Well, what about that guy that was swallowed by that whale?"She replied, "Oh, Jonah. Yes, I believe that, it is in the Bible."He asked, "Well, how do you suppose he survived all that time inside the whale?"The woman said, "Well, I don't really know. I guess when I get to heaven, I will ask him.""What if he isn't in heaven?" the man asked sarcastically. "Then you can ask him," replied the woman.

JUST A THOUGHT on 9 / 11:
Just as the last generation remember where they were when they heard of the assassination of JFK (22/11/1963), this generation will remember where they were when they heard of the terrorist attacks in New York on Sept 11th 2011. Some say that the terrorist attacks of 9/11, were a wake-up call from God. That day may have transformed our faith and made us more focused and as we watched the towers fall, we asked ourselves how many were not ready to step into eternity. We don’t want anybody to die without Jesus. As a country we have pushed God farther and farther out of our government, businesses, marketplace and schools. It's time to invite Him back. We may very well be living in the most critical generation
since Jesus was born. We are fanatical about sports, we are consumed with eating and exercise and entertainment, we are preoccupied with the lifestyles of the rich and famous, and we zealously pursue greater heights on the corporate ladder. We fight over the style of church music, argue over political candidates, dream of bigger houses, cars and portfolios – totally unaware that we are all living on the brink of what? We are living on the brink of radical inside-out, upside-down, never-be-the-same-again change! We live our lives as though this life is all there is or ever will be. Take time out to stop and think. And the best way to do that is to start today. Or during the week when you pass the church. Why not stop and drop in. Spend a few moments there just yourself and God. That peace with God may be all you need.

FEAST DAYS OF THE WEEK – THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS

Mon 12th Sept St. Ailbe. (Ireland) died c541.
Disciple of St Patrick. Noted for his charity and his excellent preaching. Little else is known for sure, but many stories have attached to Ailbhe. One story stays that he was born to parents so poor that they were unable to feed him, and abandoned him in the
deep woods; a she-wolf, running from hunters, settled beside the baby and suckled him as one of her cubs; the hunters found them, saved the baby and spared the wolf.

Tue 13th Sept St. John Chrysostom (Antioch) 347-407.
Patriarch of Constantinople. Well educated; one of the most famous orators of his day. It was for his sermons that John earned the title "Chrysostom" (golden mouthed). He criticized the rich for not sharing their wealth, prevented the sale of ecclesiastical offices, called for fidelity in marriage and encouraged practices of justice and charity.

Wed 14th Sept Exaltation of the Cross.
Early in the fourth century St. Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ's life. She razed the Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Saviour's tomb, and her son built the
Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre over the tomb. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. Its purpose is to commemorate the recovering of a portion of the Holy Cross that had fallen into the hands of the Persians. Emperor Heraclius recovered this precious relic and brought it back to Jerusalem on 3/5/629

Thu 15th Sept Our Lady of Sorrows.
This feast-day was originally granted to the Order of the Servants of Mary in 1667 by commemorating Our Lady of Sorrows, we call to mind the sufferings that Mary endured as part of her vocation as the Mother of the Redeemer. No one is closer to Christ than Mary; consequently no one has participated more intimately in the redemptive suffering of Christ than His Mother Mary.

Fri 16th Sept St. Cornelius & Cyprian.
Cornelius, Pope, martyred in 253. His friend St. Cyprian was martyred in 258. A document from Cornelius shows the extent of organization in the Church of Rome in 250: 46 priests, seven deacons and seven subdeacons. It is estimated that the number of Christians totalled about 50,000. The greatest problem of Cornelius's two-year term as pope had to do with the Sacrament of Penance and centred on the re-admission of Christians who had denied their faith during the time of persecution. Cornelius held a synod at Rome in 251 and ordered the "relapsed" to be restored to the Church with the usual "medicines of repentance."

Sat 17th Sept St. Robert Bellarmine. (Italy) 1642-1621.
Great defender of Catholic doctrine. He gave most of his money to the poor. At one point he used the tapestries in his living quarters to clothe the poor, saying, "the walls won't catch cold." The last major controversy of Bellarmine's life came in 1616 when he had to admonish his friend Galileo, whom he admired. Bellarmine delivered the admonition on behalf of the Holy Office, which had decided that the heliocentric theory of Copernicus (the sun as stationary) was contrary to Scripture. The admonition amounted to a caution against putting forward—other than as a hypothesis—theories not yet fully proved. This shows that saints are not infallible.
