A LITTLE BIT OF HUMOUR: Daniel O’Donnell, Is That Really You?
A young Protestant minister moved to a new town and decided he would go around and introduce himself to the new congregation. He rang the first door bell and a lady came to the door. She stared at him as he introduced himself. She said, “I can't believe how much you look like Daniel O’Donnell.” He replied, “Yes, ma’am, I hear that a lot.” He went to the next house and the next, and every lady that came to the door said the same thing—that he looked like Daniel O’Donnell. At the last house, a shapely young lady came to the door. He started to introduce himself, but she screamed, “Daniel O’Donnell!” The pastor stood there, stunned. Then he said, “Hello, darling!”

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK
Q. Why does God not appear in person or by way of a burning bush or booming voice to make it a bit easier to believe?
A. Would such a manifestation move people to believe in the sense of committing themselves in mind and heart to God? When God spoke on earth through the life of Jesus Christ, despite his inspiring message and deeds of healing and compassion, he was rejected by many and crucified! ‘If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead’ (Luke 16:31). Signs from God are not lacking. People who do not want to believe will somehow find a reason to reject any sign. It's not wonders that we lack but wonderment. Silvester O’Flynn OFM Cap
THANK YOU:
Fr. Liam Dunne from Divine World Missionaries spoke at all the Masses in the parish last weekend. He wishes to thank you all for the Offertory collection of last Sunday, which amounted to €1,912. Thank You.
FEAST DAYS OF THE WEEK – THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS
Mon 5th Sept BL TERESA OF CALCUTTA. (Albania) 1910-1997.
AKA Mother Teresa; Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu; and Saint of the Gutters. Daughter of an Albanian businessman who died when Agnes was nine years old. Nun, missionary and teacher in Calcutta. In 1948 she left the convent to work alone with the poor, and became an Indian citizen. She founded the Congregation of the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and started their work with lepers and in disaster areas. She received the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Tue 6thSept ST. MARGARET BERMINGHAM. (Ireland) 1515-1584.
Born Margaret Bermingham, she married a prosperous merchant in Dublin. Her eldest son, Walter, however, became a Protestant. Margaret provided 'safe houses' for bishops and priests passing through Dublin and would invite Walter to dine with them, hoping for his reconversion. Walter was elected Mayor of Dublin. He had his mother arrested and drawn through the streets on a wooden hurdle, as she could no longer walk, to Dublin Castle. Here she remained imprisoned for the rest of her life. If she had renounced her faith she could have returned home, but she refused and died in prison aged 70 in 1584.
Wed 7thSept BLESSED FREDERICK OZANAM (Italy) 1813-1853.
Frederick was the 5th of 14 children, one of only three to reach adulthood. As a teenager he began having doubts about his religion. Frederick wanted to study literature, although his father, a doctor, wanted him to become a lawyer. At college when certain professors there mocked Catholic teachings in their lectures, Frederick defended the Church. A discussion club Frederick was "Let us be frank, Mr. Ozanam; let us also be very particular. What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?" Frederick was stung by the question. He soon decided that his words needed a grounding in action. He began visiting Paris tenements & offering assistance as best they could. Soon a group dedicated to helping individuals in need under the patronage of St. Vincent de Paul formed around Frederick. Frederick was beatified in 1997. Since Frederick wrote an excellent book entitled Franciscan Poets of the Thirteenth Century & since Frederick's sense of the dignity of each poor person was so close to the thinking of St. Francis, it seemed appropriate to include him among Franciscan "greats."
Thu 8th Sept Birthday of Our Lady
Probably originated after the Council of Ephesus in 431, which established her right to the title of "Mother of God." This feast is a commemoration of that happy and joyful day on which the ever-blessed virgin Mother of God first saw the light of day. A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 (9 months earlier).
Fri 9th Sept St Ciaran was born in Roscommon about 512.
He came to Clonmacnoise in January 545 where he founded a monastery which was to become one of the most renowned in Europe. He died at the age of 33 while the monastery was still being built. One of the twelve Apostles of Ireland.
Sat 10th Sept St. Nicholas of Tolentino. (Italy) 1245-1305.
Reported to have resurrected over one hundred dead children, including several who had drowned together. Legend says that the devil once beat Nicholas with a stick; the stick was displayed for years in his church. An apparition of the saint once saved the burning palace of the Doge of Venice.
