Simon Ryan Theatre Presents The Country Boy - 21st January 2012
To mark the first anniversary of the death of our father Simon, a very special production of John Murphy's The Country Boy, will be staged on Saturday 21st January 2012 at the Simon Ryan Theatre, Tipperary Excel, Tipperary Town, Co. Tipperary.
This fundraising production will be performed by Lucan Dramatic Society, who first performed The Country Boy in 1974. (In that production, the role of Eddie was played by our father).
Tipperary Excel Heritage Company was established in 2001 and was generously supported by our late uncle, Dr. Tony Ryan, who requested the theatre be named after his brother.
Commenting on the special evening of drama and fund raising, Kerry Ryan, Ciaran Ryan, Simon Ryan said "they hoped the evening will be a fitting occasion to honour their father's memory and to pay tribute to the many years of enjoyment and entertainment he gave audiences during his time with Lucan Dramatic Society, Stacumny Players and the Old Barn Playhouse, while also acknowledging his lifelong love of drama and the arts".
Kerry Ryan who recently joined the board of the Tipperary Excel Heritage Company, which houses the theatre, said "she was looking forward to the working all board members and Mary Sarsfield, General Manager to further raise the profile of Tipperary Excel and to continue to bring great Drama & Arts to the people of Tipperary Town and the surrounding community.
The evening will commence at 7.30pm with a pre-theatre drinks reception, with curtains up at 8.30pm. Simon Ryan, whose family hails from Co. Tipperary, was born at Limerick Junction, spent his formative years in Thurles, before leaving to work in the UK as a young man. He settled back in Co. Kildare in the late 1960s/early 1970s. His love of drama and the arts started at a young age and is something that stayed with him all his life.
He made his stage debut at the tender age of eight as a cowboy in a national school Thurles production. His last performance on stage saw him play "Father Jack" in the much loved Brian Friel's "Dancing at Lughnasa in a Stacumny Players production, which took place in December 2010. He also had a lifelong interest and passion in Tipperary Hurling and served many years on the Tipperary Supporters Club.
All ticket proceeds and monies raised will go towards funding the centre, which provides a great service to Tipperary Town and the community at large.
