QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK: Q.: Where are the original manuscripts of the Gospels and letters of St Paul? A.: There are no surviving original manuscripts of any part of the Bible, just as there are no original fragments of any of the famous Greek or Roman writers of that period such as Virgil or Cicero. We depend on copies of all these writings and copies of copies. Copyists were far from perfect and there are thousands of variations among the documents. The oldest surviving fragments of New Testament texts date from about 150 AD. The oldest complete New Testament dates from the fourth century. Some of the oldest fragments, dating from 250 AD are lodged in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin. (©Fr. Sylvester O’Flynn OFM Cap.)
CO CLARE AGRICULTURAL SHOW, taking place in Ennis Showgrounds, Ennis, Co Clare this Sunday August 1st. Fun for all the family from 10.30 till late.
FEAST OF THE TRANSFIGURATION, FRIDAY 6TH AUGUST: The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark and Luke all tell the story of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1 8; Mark 9:2 9; Luke 9:28 36). And all three place the event shortly after Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus is the Messiah and Jesus’ first prediction of his passion and death. The Gospels draw heavily on Old Testament descriptions of the mount Sinai encounter of Moses with God and prophetic visions of the Son of Man. Certainly Peter, James and John had a glimpse of Jesus’ divinity strong enough to strike fear into their hearts. Such an experience defies description, so they drew on familiar religious language to describe it. And certainly Jesus warned them that his glory and his suffering were to be inextricably connected—a theme John highlights throughout his Gospel. Tradition names Mt. Tabor as the site of the revelation. A church first raised there in the 4th century was dedicated on August 6th. A feast in honour of the Transfiguration was celebrated in the Eastern Church from about that time. In the West on July 22, 1456, Christian Crusaders defeated the Turks at the Siege of Belgrade, during which the Muslim Turks were routed and the Islamic advance into Europe was halted. News of the victory reached Rome on August 6th, and to celebrate the great Christian victory Pope Callixtus III elevated the Transfiguration to a feast of the universal Church and established August 6th as the date of its celebration.
